cycling around the world – 32 – don’t cry for me argentina

hi bigmoose chum,

does your life speed by as much as mine?

it’s bin day again.

where did that week go?

i’ve just worked out i’ve been alive for 3226 bin days.

that’s quite a lot of recycling.

though a very big proportion of those bin days we didn’t recycle, for at least two thirds of those bin days we just put our rubbish in one bin.

is it just me or does it feel like if i actually put all of my rubbish in one bin it would need to be the size of a mini skip?

i currently have five bins, which tania and i regularly fill to the brim by friday morning, we obviously produce an obscene amount of waste, i must add this to my to do list to discuss with tan.

today however our five bins are less than half full.

why, i hear you say out loud causing those around you to audibly gasp.

don’t worry, there’s a perfectly understandable explanation.

we weren’t in the house over the weekend.

no occupation, no rubbish.

we went to our original home city, london, for a weekend, as we had booked to see the new version of ‘evita’, the popular west end show of the 90’s based upon the argentinian politician, activist, and actress eva peron.

the reprise of said show wouldn’t have really appealed to me, but my trip to argentina a couple of years ago to attempt but fail to climb mount aconcagua, had seen me fall in love with this beautiful country and it’s people, we pressed ‘book tickets’.

now i wouldn’t normally share my theatre going exploits, but this show had a number of threads that have left me wowed.

the star of the show is the 24 year old rachel zegler, who for one so young has had a very full life so far, starring in spielbergs west side story, winning a golden globe, but then has faced a public backlash when cast in the recent remake of snow white, and her political bent has caused a stir too, which interested me, and had me excited to see what she brought to the role.

i wasn’t disappointed.

she was amazing, and we both rated her and the show a ten, a score i don’t remember affording to a musical ever before.

but my main reason for sharing this experience with you is to share a part of the show, that upon reflection has blown my mind.

the rough synopsis of the story is eva, born into poverty, becomes a popular actress, marries juan peron, who becomes president, and she is adored by the argentinian people.

now, there is a part of the show where projected on the full width of the stage there is footage of eva standing on the balcony of the theatre, with a massive throng of people below, and she proceeds to sing the signature song ‘don’t cry for me argentina’, which she sings beautifully, then appears on stage and continues singing, very clever, and the footage in my mind was obviously shot prior to the show, some time before.

but no, here is the genius.

this footage is shot every night, live.

and here is the absolute brilliance of this idea, every night at 9pm a huge crowd assembles below the london palladium balcony, waiting for eva to sing to them.

and every night the crowd films the performance, and every night they share this experience online, and every night people say i must go to see the show.

absolute marketing genius.

watch rachel zelger's performance below

6 minutes 15 seconds to see the crowd.

cool huh?

this just goes to show, that even in this wonderful, ai fuelled world we live in, there are still new ideas waiting to be invented, i can only hope that i find one as good as this one day.

i am back to london this weekend to see bigmoose supporter duncan covey return from cycling around the world, and can’t wait to see him, and celebrate his adventure.

duncan had a traumatic episode whilst on his adventure, and reached out to us for help, which we provided online, and he then set about trying to fundraise £5,000 for us, a big ask.

today his fundraising sits at £16,847 which is phenomenal, and i can’t wait to hear his stories and see what the future holds for him, he is a great raconteur.

give him a follow.

well that’s it for another week, i’m off to put the bins out.

blue skies,

jeff

p.s. confused.com signed up for a bike after our talk last week, plus another one yesterday, puts us on 32, 68 to go, this is going to be tough.
